In the small southern Illinois town of Metropolis, visitors are greeted by one of the most recognizable superhero tributes in the world: the Superman statue. Standing proudly in the city square, this monument has become a cultural icon, drawing fans of the Man of Steel from across the globe.
Metropolis officially adopted the title “Home of Superman” in 1972, when DC Comics partnered with the city to cement the connection between the fictional setting and the real town. Early plans once envisioned a massive Superman theme park, complete with a 200-foot statue towering over the entrance. While the park never came to life, the idea of a Superman statue remained.
The first statue, a seven-foot fiberglass figure erected in 1986, quickly fell victim to vandalism and was unpopular with residents. In response, the community rallied together to create something more lasting. On June 5, 1993, the current 15-foot bronze Superman statue was unveiled in the heart of downtown Metropolis, standing in front of the Massac County Courthouse in what is now known as Superman Square.
The statue was funded largely through engraved bricks purchased by supporters, raising over $120,000. Weighing about three tons, the painted bronze figure of Superman has become a beloved landmark and a lasting tribute to the city’s superhero legacy.
The Superman statue is painted in the hero’s classic red, blue, and yellow colors, with Superman striking his signature heroic pose. Surrounding the base are over a thousand engraved bricks, each representing local residents and fans who helped bring the monument to life.
Just across the street sits the Super Museum, home to one of the largest private collections of Superman memorabilia in the world. Visitors can also find a statue of Lois Lane nearby, celebrating Superman’s famous partner.
Over the years, the statue has been carefully maintained and repainted, with one quirky tradition left for visitors: a small unpainted spot on Superman’s left boot is considered a “lucky spot,” where tourists often rub for good fortune.
The statue serves as the centerpiece of Metropolis tourism. Each June, the town hosts the Superman Celebration, a festival that attracts comic book fans, artists, and celebrities. The monument has also played a major role in shaping the town’s identity, ensuring that Metropolis is forever linked with Superman in the minds of visitors.
Surrounded by shops, restaurants, and themed attractions, the Superman statue is not only a photo opportunity but also a symbol of pride for the people of Metropolis. It stands as a reminder that even small towns can be home to larger-than-life legends.
