If you’re planning a trip along historic Route 66, one of the most iconic stops you can make is Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas. This roadside art installation is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the state—a must-see for travelers, photographers, and anyone who loves a little roadside Americana.
Cadillac Ranch features ten half-buried Cadillacs standing nose-down in the dirt, their tail fins pointing toward the sky. The cars are covered in layers of spray paint from countless visitors who’ve left their mark over the years. It’s completely legal—and even encouraged—to bring your own spray paint and add your own touch to the artwork. The installation sits in an open field right off Interstate 40, making it easy to access for anyone driving through Amarillo.
Parking at Cadillac Ranch is simple and free. There’s a small dirt parking lot located along the south frontage road of I-40 (just west of Amarillo), and the cars are about a five-minute walk into the field from there. The path is generally flat but can get muddy after rain, so wearing good shoes is a smart idea. Since it’s outdoors, you can visit any time of day, though sunrise and sunset are especially popular times for photos.
There’s more to do in the area than just seeing the colorful Cadillacs. A short drive away is The Big Texan Steak Ranch, famous for its 72-ounce steak challenge—a true Amarillo tradition. If you’re into art, check out Amarillo Museum of Art or the quirky Route 66 Historic District, where you can find vintage shops, diners, and murals celebrating the Mother Road. For a nature break, Palo Duro Canyon State Park—often called the “Grand Canyon of Texas”—is less than an hour away and offers stunning views, hiking, and wildlife spotting.

A couple times I’ve been it was really windy, making for spray painting difficult. A few times there has been an individual selling spray paint out of a pickup truck by the gate. Wind or not, I’ll stop here every time I drive through! It’s a perfect leg stretch during a long road trip and can make for some great photos!
